| What Is This Clan Donald Foundation Thing? |
What Is This Clan Donald Foundation Thing?
We are constantly hearing about the Clan Donald Foundation. What is it and what does it do? I saw on my application that a portion of my dues goes to the Foundation but where does that money go once it goes to the Foundation?
The Clan Donald Foundation is separate from Clan Donald USA in that it operates under a different charter and a different tax exempt status than Clan Donald USA. The Foundation is a 501 (c) (3) corporation which IRS recognizes as a tax exempt charitable organization. Clan Donald USA is a 501 (c) (7) organization. It too is a tax exempt organization, however is seen as a social organization.
When the Clan Donald Lands Trust was formed, there were many in the US who wanted to contribute money to help with the upkeep of Armadale and the surrounding lands. Giving money directly to the Lands Trust in Scotland or to Clan Donald USA would not provide the donor a tax deduction. Thus the Foundation was formed. All gifts given to the Foundation are tax deductible. Donations to Clan Donald USA are not.
Whereas the original purpose of the Foundation was to assist the Lands Trust, other venues have been started to assist the various areas of Clan Donald. Funds may be given either as Unrestricted gifts or Restricted gifts. Money can be donated for the following restricted accounts: Lands Trust and Skye Museum and Library; Clan Donald Libraries in America, Clan Donald Memorial Scholarship Fund, Audie Gammon Scholarship Fund, Doug Murdock Memorial Fund, Glencoe Heritage Fund, and most recently, the Galley Trust Fund for the West Highland Galley, Aileach. Gifts restricted to any of the Restricted Funds can only be used for that specific purpose. Unrestricted gifts provide operating funds, our annual grant to the High Council of Clan Donald Chiefs and wherever the Foundation Board may feel money may be needed.
An individual may sent a check or money order as an outright gift or a memorial or honorarium to someone. An individual may not be in a position to give a gift presently. One may wish to leave a gift in their will or take out a life insurance party and name the Foundation as the beneficiary.
Clan Donald was given a challenge by Rosa McDonald before she died. She challenged Clan Donald to match her gift of $250,000 for the Skye Museum and Library. We are slowly chipping away at our responsibility.
Should you wish to make a donation to the Foundation, please send your check to The Hon/ Michael P. Sullivan, President, 4691 W. Donges Lane, Brown Deer, WI 53223.
